Magic hire Bucks' Hammond as GM

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Jeff Weltman is finally getting the chance to run his own team after more than two decades of toil in NBA front offices. Faced with the daunting task of remaking the Orlando Magic, he wasted little time in adding a familiar face to help him.

Hours after the Magic formally announced Weltman Tuesday morning as their president of basketball operations, he named longtime NBA executive John Hammond the club's new general manager.

Josh Jackson to undergo anger management

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Former Kansas basketball player Josh Jackson must attend anger management classes, write a letter of apology and refrain from using alcohol or recreational drugs for a year as part of a diversion agreement arising from his confrontation with a Jayhawks women's basketball player last year.

Jackson, who is leaving Kansas after one season and is expected to be a top pick in next month's NBA draft, had pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor count of criminal property damage after he argued with McKenzie Calvert on Dec. 9 outside a bar in Lawrence.

Thomas visits specialist, surgery unsure

CLEVELAND (AP) Boston Celtics star guard Isaiah Thomas has visited one hip specialist and plans to see others.

Thomas, who is done for the season with a right hip injury he sustained in March and aggravated in the playoffs, told Celtics coach Brad Stevens that he intends to get "one or two more opinions" before a course of action is set. It's possible Thomas could undergo surgery on his hip. The Celtics have described Thomas' condition as a tear in his hip.

Spurs' Ginobili mulling retirement

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Manu Ginobili was swept away by the emotions of a sold-out home crowd serenading him with chants of "Manu, Manu" and rising as one for a standing ovation in the closing minutes of the Western Conference Finals.

Spurs fans were saying goodbye, but did not want to let go of the star who helped San Antonio win four of its five NBA Championships with his dynamic play.

Ainge's son to run for Congress in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The son of Boston Celtics president and former BYU basketball standout Danny Ainge is running for Congress in a Utah special election forthe seat of resigning U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz.

Tanner Ainge filed paperwork Monday to run as a Republican.

Utah F Kuzma rising up draft boards

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Kyle Kuzma wasn't sure how things would play out when he announced plans in late March to test the NBA draft. The Utah Utes junior forward was well aware of the doubters and didn't immediately hire an agent to keep open the option to return for his senior year.

A month later, Kuzma has hired an agent and is rising up the pre-draft rankings after a superb NBA combine and strong individual workouts.

Warriors reach Finals as first 12-0 team

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Golden State made sure the inevitable was unavoidable.

Heavily favored to beat the Spurs, especially once Kawhi Leonard sustained a series-ending injury, the Warriors completed a dominant sweep in the Western Conference Finals.

Threatened Kanter wants to be US citizen

Oklahoma City center Enes Kanter said Monday he routinely received death threats for criticizing the government of his native Turkey, and he may seek an expedited process toward becoming a U.S. citizen.

Kanter was detained at an airport in Romania over the weekend, with border police there saying they did so because Turkish authorities canceled his passport. Kanter eventually was allowed to leave for London and then New York, after he said officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and others intervened on his behalf.

LeBron wins NBA citizenship award

CLEVELAND (AP) Snubbed in the MVP voting, LeBron James received an award maybe more significant.

James is this year's recipient of the Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award given annually by the Pro Basketball Writers' Association for "outstanding service and dedication to the community."
